Tamahagane & Knife-Making Workshop
Make your own tamahagane steel from iron sand and use it to make knives.
Service Description
This is a special six-day workshop where guests have the opportunity to smelt and refine their own handmade steel from naturally occurring beach sand magnetite. For the first three days, guests smelt magnetite into tamahagane steel and learn about the ancient Japanese steel-making method from the Edo era, still used exclusively in crafting traditional katana swords. However, you cannot make Japanese swords.
Then, guests can craft one knife for the remaining three days using the handmade steel they helped to smelt. *Please note that the tamahagane course does not include the take-home of the leftover tamahagane used to make the tamahagane knife during the course.
